Locking the desktop

Locking the desktop

If you are leaving your computer for a while and do not wish to turn it off, but want to assure that no-one else can use the computer while you are away, locking the desktop is the best option.

By pressing WINDOWSKEY+L, you password protect your system just as if you had logged out or restarted the computer. The advantage is that any programs or processes that were running when you locked the desktop will stay open and running in the background, ready for you to resume work or play

Deleting System Softwares

Deleting System Softwares

XP hides some system software you might want to remove, such as Windows Messenger, but you can tickle it and make it disgorge everything. Using Notepad or Edit, edit the text file /windows/inf/sysoc.inf, search for the word 'hide' and remove it. You can then go to the Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel, select Add/Remove Windows Components and there will be your prey, exposed and vulnerable.

Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your computer

Creating a desktop shortcut for locking your computer

If you use your computer in an area where others may have access to it, and there are things on your system you would rather have kept confidential, locking your desktop when you leave the computer is an essential task. Here's a recipe for a desktop shortcut that will lock your computer in two easy clicks:

Right click on an empty area of the desktop and choose 'new' then 'shortcut.' The create shortcut wizard will open; in the first text box, type '%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation' and then give your shortcut an appropriate name on the next page, and hit 'finish.'

You will notice that the shortcut you created has a blank icon. To select a more appropriate one, right click on the shortcut and hit 'properties.' In the 'shortcut' tab, click the 'change icon' button.

In the 'look for icons in this file' box, type '%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll' then click 'ok' to see a range of icons for your new shortcut. Choose an appropriate icon. Your desktop locking shortcut is now ready for use. Test it out.

Stopping Unneeded Startup Services and makin windows faster

Stopping Unneeded Startup Services and makin windows faster

To reduce the number of services that start on bootup, you can access two different

areas of Windows XP.

The first is the System Configuration Utility. You can do that by entering the

command “msconfig” in the run menu.

Start Run “msconfig” (without quotes) || Hit Enter

The Services tab shows you the services that start when the computer

boots. You can stop a service from starting by simply clearing the check box

next to the service and clicking OK.

However, before you do so, there is another way to disable services that you

may prefer because the interface gives you more information about the service

in question.

Open Control Panel Administrative Tools Services or

Start Run “services.msc” || Hit Enter

Take a quick look at common services you may want to live without:

Automatic Updates: This service enables Windows XP to check the Web

automatically for updates. If you don't want to use Automatic Updates, you can

disable the service.

Computer Browser: If your computer is not on a network, you don't need this service.

If you are on a network, leave it alone.

DHCP Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service. If you are on

a small workgroup, you can still increase boot time by configuring manual IP.

DNS Client: If you are not on a network, you do not need this service.

Error Reporting and Event Log: You don't have to use these services but they can be

very helpful, so I would leave them configured as automatic.

Fax: If you don't use your computer for fax services, you can disable this one.

Help and Support: Disable if you never use the Windows XP Help and Support

Center.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM: This service enables you to burn CDs on your computer.

If you never burn CDs, you can disable the service without any second thoughts.

Indexing Service: Your computer keeps an index of all the files. But if you rarely

search for files, the service is just a resource hog. You can stop it

Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing: If you do not use these features, plz

disable.

Infrared Monitor: If you do not use infrared devices, you can disable this service.

Messenger: This service sends alert messages on a local area network (it is not the

same as Windows Messenger). If you are not on a network, you can disable this

service.

Print Spooler: If you do not do any printing from the computer, you can disable this

service. If you print, make sure you leave it as automatic.

Remote Registry: This service allows remote users to modify the Registry on your

computer. If you are not on a network, you can disable this service.

System Restore Service: This service allows you to use System Restore. If you have

turned off System Restore anyway, you do not need to turn off the service.

Themes: If you do not use themes, you can disable this service.

Windows Image Acquisition: If you do not use scanners or digital cameras, you can

disable.

Wireless Zero Configuration: If do not use wireless networking devices, you can

disable.

Stop Error Messages from Displaying on startup

Stop Error Messages from Displaying on startup

If you constantly see an error message that you can't get rid offor example, from a

piece of software that didn't uninstall properly and continues to give errors on

startupyou can disable it from displaying on startup. Run the Registry Editor and go to

HKEY_LOCAL MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows. (This

key holds a variety of Windows system settings, such as the location of your system

directory.) Create a new DWORD called NoPopupsOnBoot and give it a value of 1.

Exit the Registry and reboot for the setting to take effect. To disable it, either delete

the DWORD value or give it a value of 0.

Rename START Button

Rename START Button

To rename the start button, you will need a hex editor.

My preference is UltraEdit

Copy the \windows\explore.exe file to a new name (e.g. explorer_1.exe)

With the hex editor, open that file and go to offset 412b6

You will see the word start with blanks between each letter

Edit it be any 5 characters or less

Save the file

Boot to DOS

Copy the existing c:\windows\explorer.exe to explorer.org

Copy explorer_1.exe to explorer.exe

You will also need to replace the explorer.exe in the c:\windows\system32\dllcache file as well with the new one.

Note: If the partition is NTFS and you can't access the files from DOS:

Start Regedit

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon.

Change the value of Shell from Explorer.exe to explorer_1.exe

Speed up your Start Menu

Speed up your Star MEnu

Hey.. Speed up ur Start Menu...

As...The default setting of Windows causes a slight delay when opening the sub categories of the start menu.....

That is why we need to hover the mouse on it for about half a second.....

You can change this default setting by following these steps.....

1. Go to start==> run==> Type regedit. Press enter.....

2. Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER----> Control Panel."

3. Click on Desktop.

4. On the right pane look out for 'MenuShowDelay'....(If you can't find it right-click and create a new 'Multi-String Value' and rename it as 'MenuShowDelay')

5. The default setting is 400....

6. Double click it to modify it....

7. Set it to 0 and there will be no delay...

8. Exit registry and reboot.

However making it zero makes it difficult to move the mouse without accidentally opening other folders. So try giving some lower values and choose the one which best suits you. ..

Disable Boot logo

Disable Boot logo

You can remove the boot logo that appears when you start Windows XP. This little

tweak probably shaves only a few seconds off your boot time but seconds count if you

are serious about trying to get Windows XP up and running as quickly as possible.

The only negative is that if you remove the boot logo, you will also not see any boot

messages, such as check disk.

To remove the boot logo, follow these steps:

1. Select Start/Run, type msconfig, and click OK.

2. In the System Configuration Utility, click the BOOT.INI tab.

3. On the BOOT.INI tab, click the NOGUIBOOT check box option. Click OK

Reducing the Wait Time

Reducing the Wait Time

When you start to shut down Windows XP, it has to quit, or "kill," any live

applications or processes that are currently running. So close all applications first.

However, some applications and processes are always running in the background.

You can reduce the amount of time that Windows XP waits for those applications and

processes to close before Windows XP kills them

1. Open registry editor

2. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop. Set the

WaitToKillAppTimeout and set the value to 1000. Select the HungAppTimeout

\newline value and set it to 1000 as well.

3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control.

Select the WaitToKillServiceTimeout value and set it to 10000.

4. Close the Registry Editor

make system faster using BIOS

make system faster using BIOS

You can speed up your startup procedures by changing the BIOS with the built-in

setup utility. How you run this utility varies from PC to PC, but you typically get to it

by pressing the Delete, F1, or F10 keys during startup. You'll come to a menu with a

variety of choices. Here are the choices to make for faster system startups:

Quick Power On Self Test (POST)

When you choose this option, your system runs an abbreviated POST rather than the

normal, lengthy one.

Boot Up Floppy Seek

Disable this option. When it's enabled, your system spends a few extra seconds

looking for your floppy drivea relatively pointless procedure, especially considering

how infrequently you use your floppy drive.

Boot Delay

Some systems let you delay booting after you turn on your PC so that your hard drive

gets a chance to start spinning before bootup. Most likely, you don't need to have this

boot delay, so turn it off. If you run into problems, however, you can turn it back on

Play around registry- More Options

Launch Regedit and go to the following Registry Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER

/Software/Microsoft/CurrentVersion/Policies Under this key, there will definitely be a

key named explorer. Now under this explorer key we can create new DWORD values

and modify it's value to 1 in order to impose the restriction. If you want to remove the

Restriction, then you can simply delete the respective DWORD values or instead

change their values to 0. The following is a list of DWORD values that can be created

under the Explorer Key:

NoDeletePrinter: Disables Deletion of already installed Printers

NoAddPrinter: Disables Addition of new Printers

NoRun : Disables or hides the Run Command

NoSetFolders: Removes Folders from the Settings option on Start Menu (Control

Panel, Printers, Taskbar)

NoSetTaskbar: Removes Taskbar system folder from the Settings option on Start

Menu

NoFind: Removes the Find Tool (Start >Find)

NoDrives: Hides and does not display any Drives in My Computer

NoNetHood: Hides or removes the Network Neighborhood icon from the desktop

NoDesktop: Hides all items including, file, folders and system folders from the

Desktop

NoClose: Disables Shutdown and prevents the user from normally shutting down

Windows.

NoSaveSettings: Means to say, 'Don't save settings on exit'

DisableRegistryTools: Disable Registry Editing Tools (If you disable this option, the

Windows Registry Editor(regedit.exe) too will not work.)

NoRecentDocsHistory: Removes Recent Document system folder from the Start

Menu (IE 4 and above)

ClearRecentDocsOnExit: Clears the Recent Documents system folder on Exit.

Nolnternetlcon: Removes the Internet (system folder) icon from the Desktop

Now create a new key and name it System. Under this new key, system we can create

the following new DWORD values

NODispCPL: Hides Control Panel

NoDispBackgroundPage: Hides Background page.

NoDispScrsavPage: Hides Screen Saver Page

NoDispAppearancePage: Hides Appearance Page

NoDispSettingsPage: Hides Settings Page

NoSecCPL: Disables Password Control Panel

NoPwdPage: Hides Password Change Page

NoAdminPaqe: Hides Remote Administration Page

NoProfilePage: Hides User Profiles Page

NoDevMgrPage: Hides Device Manager Page

NoConfigPage: Hides Hardware Profiles Page

NoFileSysPage: Hides File System Button

NoVirtMemPage: Hides Virtual Memory Button

Similarly, if we create a new subkey named Network, we can add the following

DWORD values under it:

NoNetSetupSecurityPage: Hides Network Security Page

NoNelSetup: Hides or disables the Network option in the Control Panel

NoNetSetupIDPage: Hides the Identification Page

NoNetSetupSecurityPage: Hides the Access Control Page

NoFileSharingControl: Disables File Sharing Controls

NoPrintSharing: Disables Print Sharing Controls

SOME SYMBIAN TIPS AND TRICKS

Tip 1 :Do u know how to use the edit button (abc or pencil button)?Heres how... in the inbox for example; u wanna delete multiple sms, simply hold the edit button, scroll down, and then, press c to delete the marked sms. The edit button can also b used to copy and past text in sms, simply hold it and scroll across, choose copy. pretty good for placing song names in ngage.

Tip 2:Shit happens,on a smartphone, its inevitable u do something wrong, and tis calls for a format of fone. to format the fone, press *#7370#, then enter the lock code, which is the sec code of the fone.

NOTE: batt must b full, else if format is disrupted by low batt, consequences will b disastrous.I heard the code *#7780# works too, pretty much the same i think.

for 6600 users, to format the fone, theres an alternative way. Press and hold <3>, <*>, and the buttons, then power on fone, keep holding on the 3 buttons, till u come to a format screen. tis method ONLY works on 6600, and need not enter the sec code. BUT sec code wud be reset to default 12345.

Tip3:TO NGAGE USERS; Did u know u can install .sis files simply using the cable given? Juz plug it in, place the .sis file anywhere on e:(the mmc), not in any folders, root of e:,disconnect, then look for it in manager.

Tip 4:Save memory when installing apps, by installing over bluetooth. This can be done using the nokia phone suite and a bluetooth serial connection. Only works with .SIS files, so java still has to be sent to the phone, but will save space when using .SIS files.
